SCULPTURE

A journey to capture equine movement and personality

Portrait of Ruffian

This highly detailed articulated sculpture is of a racehorse, with each piece shaped to be a most slender yet powerful, light-footed streamlined young horse. This model was a journey to sculpt as lifelike as possible and to try to highlight and honor her short life.

The sculpture is intentionally created in traditional materials such as wood selected for specific properties, fine cow leather, real goat hair, complemented with metal and finished in natural (historic pigments) oil-based paints. All details and aspects of the design of each part together achieve the maximum possible realistic effect. She has custom made leather leg wraps and a complete set of handmade leather halter, bridle and saddle.

"Sculptures reflecting natural movement and expression"

Artist statement by Maria Talasz“

Years ago I envisioned building a horse sculpture capable of expressing moods. To a large extent, a horse uses body language to communicate. To make that possible in my versions of articulation, the horse's neck gets extra attention. It plays a large role in this language, together with ears, eyes, mouth, nose, and tail. The movement of a neck has to be smooth in moving up and down, nicely arching, and well flexing. In addition, the ears have to be able to move in all natural directions. As they are very detailed and natural looking each horse develops into their own personality.
